Sound Healing 101: What It Is, How It Works, and Why I Keep Coming Back to It

The first time I experienced a sound healing session, I honestly didn't know what to expect.

I had heard people describe it as relaxing, emotional, even transformational. But if I'm being completely honest, I was skeptical. I wasn't sure how simply lying down and listening to sound could have any real impact on the way I felt.

Then the session began.

For almost an hour, there was nothing I needed to do. No breathing technique to remember. No posture to perfect. No conversation to hold. Just sound.

Something shifted that day, not because the sound "fixed" me, but because it gave my mind permission to become quiet in a way it hadn't for a long time.

Since then, sound healing has become one of the practices I return to again and again, not because I believe it's magic, but because I've experienced what happens when we intentionally create space for the nervous system to slow down.

What Is Sound Healing?

At its simplest, sound healing is the practice of using instruments such as crystal singing bowls, gongs, chimes, or other resonant instruments to create sound vibrations that support deep relaxation and meditation.

Unlike listening to music during your commute or while working, a sound healing session is intentionally designed to help you become fully present. There is nothing to achieve. Nothing to perform.

The invitation is simply to listen. For many people, that's surprisingly difficult and incredibly healing.

What Happens in Your Body?

One of the reasons sound healing has become increasingly popular is because researchers have begun exploring its effects on stress and well-being.

Several studies have found that sound meditation may help reduce tension, anxiety, feelings of fatigue, and improve overall mood after a single session. While more research is still needed to understand all of its mechanisms, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: creating intentional moments of deep relaxation has measurable benefits for both the mind and body.

When we slow down, our nervous system has the opportunity to shift away from the constant "fight-or-flight" response that so many of us unknowingly live in.

Our breathing becomes deeper. Our muscles soften. Our attention moves inward. Sometimes, that's exactly what we've been needing.

More Than Relaxation

People often ask me if they need to "understand" sound healing before trying it. The answer is no. You don't need to know anything about frequencies or instruments.

You don't even need to believe it's going to work. You simply need to be willing to receive the experience. What I love most about sound healing is that everyone experiences it differently.

Some people leave feeling deeply rested. Others notice emotional release. Some gain unexpected clarity about a situation they've been navigating. Others simply enjoy an hour of uninterrupted stillness. None of these experiences are right or wrong. They're simply reflections of what your body and mind may need in that moment.

Why Sound Healing Is Part of Sacred Radiance

When I began designing Sacred Radiance, I knew I wanted every practice to serve a purpose.

Sound healing isn't included because it's trendy.

It's included because I believe transformation doesn't happen when we're constantly doing more.

It happens when we create enough safety for ourselves to finally slow down.

Throughout our retreat in Tulum this November, sound healing becomes one of the many ways we gently transition from doing into being.

Combined with Kundalini Yoga, Mayan healing rituals, conscious ceremonies, nourishing meals, and the support of a community of women, these sessions create space for deep restoration not only physically, but emotionally as well.

My hope isn't that you leave with all the answers.

It's that you leave feeling more connected to yourself than when you arrived.

What Should You Expect?

If you've never experienced sound healing before, let your first session be exactly that your first session.

Come with curiosity instead of expectation. You don't have to force anything. You don't have to make anything happen.

Just allow yourself to rest. Sometimes, the greatest healing doesn't come from finding something new. It comes from finally creating enough quiet to hear what has been within you all along.
